cheapest car to run

Don't think I'll be doing that many miles so the cost of road tax becomes important. I may be a dedicated tight a*** but I'd like some comfort these days so am happy to pay a bit extra for a newer car with aircon etc.
Spent most of my life running bangers (last car was a 1991 Nissan Sunny made almost entirely of rust) so would like to drive something made in the 21st century for a change!0 -
As far as i can see the Kia picanto is the cheapest car out there taking everything into consideration.
£2,000 - £3,000 to buy second hand, 55mpg, insurance group 2, tax band D0 -
Ive a 1l agila, its only 3 cylinder 55mpg, 110 tax per year. Insuarance group 2 (very low), really comfy plenty of head room and foot room. easy to handle fits in parking spaces brillianlt, drop the back seats and its huge. 3 adults can sit in the back with ease, it even fits 3 child seats in.0

If your not doing many miles then dont bother with a diesel as the extra MPG will be outweighed by the higher purchase price.
Also dont get hung up on cheap tax - as others have said it is a fairly small part of motoring costs and you may get a better cars for your money if you pay just that little bit more in tax each year.0 -
Don't forget depreciation - that's a far bigger cost than the VED will be.
To use your example, the Arosa could still work out cheaper than the Charade as the Daihatsu will plummet in value compared to the Seat. The Arosa might be more expensive to buy, but there's a strong argument to say that you'll lose less when you sell it at the other end.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. My friend owns a Suzuki Alto 2004 (04) 998cc petrol model. He says it does around 50 mpg and it costs £20 per annum to tax it.0

No sorry there isn't, all cars this age will be virtually worthless anyway in 2-3 years time, they'll both be worth less than £1000. Paying less in the first place will nearly always be more cost effective.0
