Which Laptop please and where from?

Good Afternoon peeps,

Some advice from all those in the know about which Laptop to choose for my Tadpole please and where to get it from, would be much appriciated.

She already has one but it is 5 years old and very slow and now the screen has gone completely. She was clamping it because it was "bleeding" but now even the clamp wont make it work. I think it's safe to say it's past it!

She is on the thing daily, well , not anymore as it's broken, so I'd like as best as I can get for my money (obviously, Frogga:rolleyes:).

Don't know ANY technical things AT ALL other than I should n't get a "Dell" cause they are crap(?) and I shouldn't go to PC World?? Don't want it til Jan as it's for Bday not Christmas so hoping I might get lucky in the sales.

My budget is £350ish although I could go a little higher. Oh, and if possible I think she'd like one in pink or purple (I know, I know that's not the most important bit!)

Anyone help a thickie Frog on Christmas Eve? :D

Are you after a fully-fledged laptop or, for that price, a netbook? I often think speaking in the generic about brands (Dell, Asus, Acer etc.) is unhelpful; it's far better to narrow down one's choice to a particular brand and model. Dell made some abysmal netbooks in their early incarnations. Asus and Samsung make some excellent netbooks. Dell do make some very decent laptops - but one needs to tread carefully ;)

Would this machine be, say, for homework and Office applications?

    :D Hi Busenbust

Thanks for replying. Tadpole does lots of homework, always on the net, goes onto that face book thing, emails, erm and other stuff :o not really sure, but she's very good at it :D

Don't even know what a netbook is?? :o

Fine example here; have a thorough read, and also will give you a good marker on netbook/laptop price differential ;)

Wired did a guide to the current best laptops (netbooks and full-size) in November: wired.com/reviews/product/giftguide_notebook . Hopefully it's still in date, though if someone finds any particular post-Xmas bargains it would be great if they posted them here (I'm hoping to get one myself, to beat the VAT increase).
