Spare Key for Kia

Options
Bought a Kia Picanto recently with just one key. What is the best way to get a duplicate made? The car has an immobiliser so it is not as simple as having a key cut.

you have to take it to a Kia Dealer and have to have the master key or the dog tag with a code on it. Then your key is ordered and then coded at the Kia centre .

The Key code is specific for the key manufacturer to get the right shape cut. The code is then added when the key has come from the manufacture to the Dealer. You will also have to leave your car at the dealer for a hr. Its not easy like it used to be before Immobilizers but then its worth the hassel as it makes your car pointless to steal without a key.

If you bought it privately, another option may be to contact the previous owner and ask for the spare key(s).

Many people keep one when they sell the car in the (largely mistaken) belief that it will make getting the car back easier if your payment bounces.

Thanks all and how dozy of me to post on the wrong board.

I am waiting to get a quotation from Kia but was hoping to find a cheaper alternative. No chance of going back to the previous owner as it was an ex-lease car bought at auction.

Some high street locksmiths/key cutters/shoe repairers now have the equipment to cut and program certain manufacturers coded keys - may be worth a few phone calls, as they will be cheaper than the main dealer.
