How to use an IPOD?

Hello, this is my first posting, although I've lurked for months :rotfl:
My daughter would like to buy an IPOD with her birthday money, but I have no idea how we get the music onto it - is there a Noddy's guide somewhere? I have a laptop, but only have dial-up, not broadband. Is it easy to get music onto the IPOD and how much would it cost? Do i need any software?
Thanks so much for your help, and keep up the good work :j
