112mb of ram for running xp, man it must be slow,
112 milli-bits is a tiny amount of memory!
  • ok I've just deleted one of the user logins not not needed that was also an administrator (?) and instantly the computer has gone quicker which is really really wierd.
Its never been super fast but a few weeks ago it was not this slow, thats why I'm trying to get it back to the basics.

You need to strip out all the extra stuff loading at startup using msconfig, autoruns, hijackthis - if you have a virus scanner, that will probably use up most of the available ram on it's own, causing swapping, you need 512MB to run smoothly, but could get away with 256.

  • Could be multi tasking but as previously mentioned, ram is not sufficient. Also capacity on disk can effect virtual memory
  • Where is the cheapest place to buy memory? Im after 2gb in 2x1gb slots. Ive looked on ebay and it seems quite cheap but im not sure if i should trust it. also is it as easy as opening your computer up and just sloting them in??? Will my comp just then notice its there?

Beware buying 1 gig chips on ebay as the vast majority are HIGH DENSITY and wont work on most computers

Look at post 3. Go to crucial first and find out EXACTLY what memory you need (DDR / DDR2 / DDR3, Buffered / unbuffered, how many pins etc) as it's very easy to order the wrong ones if you're not careful. Then search around 'safe' sites like Ebuyer for the best price. And yes, it IS as easy as taking the cover off and slotting them in once you've got the right ones.
  • brilliant thanks everyone, il do that.
  • May be you should upgarde the memory or empty your pc memory...........
