Set up fees

I'm with Plusnet for my home phone and it costs 9p to set up the connection for every call you make, plus of course the cost per minute. That worked out a minimum of 13p for each call, even if it only lasted 5 seconds. I think BT is about the same. Does anyone know of cheaper set up charges? Also if you use one of these override provider like 18185. Do you still have to pay the set up charge to your normal phone provider

Welcome to the MSE forums bernharvey.

No, if your line provider allows the use of prefix override codes, the prefix takes the call off your line provider's network and you pay the override company's call set up fee, not your line provider's.

Hence, with 1899, 18185 and 18866, the connection charge is 5p and you pay them, not your line provider.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
