For the system to work how you want it to, you will have to change certain aspects of the system. You could always move the programmer - or get a remote one then it can be placed anywhere.

The current system has a back boiler behind the fire. The cupboard is beside the fireplace and it contains the programmer. This used to be a mechanical one with just a 24 hour setting. It was changed to a 7 day digital programmer. They did discuss the possibility of relocating the timer outside of this cupboard but apparently decided that the timer there coupled with the programmable thermostat (which replaced an older non-digital thermostat) would do the job. Unfortunately it seems not entirely.
IMO its pointless changing the system unless your changing the boiler & cylinder, because the cost wouldn't be worth it for the amount of time you will get from the boiler

This is my son's first home and one I would imagine him to be moving up from in less than 5 years so it doesn't sound viable.

Your correct. For the amount of time the boiler will last / how much you will save is not worth it.

I doubt he will be in this house as long as the boiler would last - he will probably want to move to an actual house as opposed to a cottage flat.
Again, the boiler will only heat the cylinder when it has gone below 65. So, the wastage of gas should be minimal really. Underfloor systems work on the same principal that you leave them on all day all night and control them from a thermostat

For 6 months of the year when he is using heating I would probably agree with leaving it on.

However I think he was concerned that over the summer months when he was using no heating his gas last year cost him around £5 pm as it was only on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. Left on all day it was costing around £15.

So for the 6 months when the heating is not required can he not change the timing of the hot water?

    1. Get a sideways swinging wall mount for the TV, clearing the cupboard.

    2. Get a 96" motorised projector screen, ceiling mounted. The projector can be mounted on a coffee table/TV stand,
above the Sky+HD. Mount a 28" TV on the cupboard door for casual viewing. Mother takes monster 50" plasma to bigger house, where it belongs.

    Can;t be changed.
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:Your very next para says it can. LoL.
To have independent control of the heating and hot water, you would need an S plan system. This consists of a pump and two motorized valves. The boiler won't "fire" unless the cylinder thermostat is calling for heat ie the temperature inside the cylinder is below 65
But is it worth the cost? Frankly I'd say no.

    Cheers

I would imagine he will. It's just that he would have preferred not to have to move the TV.

It's not just the TV - it's the whole AV unit that it sits on.

Now don't give him ideas. ;)

    Now there's an idea!
