Ensuite door advice

Options
We're currently redecorating our ensuite and would like to put it a proper door (at the moment there's a curtain separating it from the bedroom). The problem is that the door space isn't a standard door size, so an ordinary interior door won't do the trick, which is no doubt why the previous owners didn't install one.

I haven't measured the exact dimensions, though of course I can if that helps at all, but basically it's shorter and narrower than a normal door space. I'd prefer to get something that's actually a door, rather than simply something to separate the two rooms, but all the doors I seem to be able to find are standard size. Is the only solution to get one custom made?

  • what about a wardrobe door - or get one made - a local joiner or carpenter can do this easily and costs less than you'd think.
  • Measure and post the opening height and width Conradmum ,you will get plenty of advice then.Just need a few details

One solution is to buy an 8x4 sheet of 12mm Moisture resistant MDF.

Cut out a piece to the size of the door you need. Then cut another two strips of MDF from whats left on the sheet ,making them as long as the door and say 90mm wide.Glue and pin these on the face of the door(vertically ,flush with the edge of the MDF.Then cut a strip in between them which again will be the same width(90mm) and glue and pin at the top of the door ,so it looks like the top rail of the door. Then cut a wider strip say 175mm wide and another 200 mm wide ,then glue and pin these on the door, one just below the centre of the door, horizontally to look as a middle rail(lock rail) and the other at the bottom of the door to look like a bottom rail.

If you work out the sizes required many timber merchants will cut to size the MDF sheet for you, just leaving the glueing and pinning for you to do..

The door should look like a 2 panelled door, you can then apply a panelled moulding to add detail if you prefer.

Be sure to do the same on the back of the door too, as this will balance the MDF,if you only door one side (front) then the door will bow.

Then paint the door and hang it on 3 hinges.

Thats a cheaper way to DIY.If you don't think you can do it and its not possible to cut down a standard door then you will need to get a joiner in.

What size is it you need.
I've cut down hollow moulded doors, the re-glued the edge strips back into the panels, to make smaller doors.

Okay, I've just been to measure it. It's 1920mm x 772mm. As I said, there's no frame at the moment. Just painted plaster.

Thanks to those who've replied so far.
  • could you buy a proper plain wooden interior door (not a hollow one) and just chop it back to required size?

If you go to a decent door supplier or timber merchant, you can buy something called a 'door blank'. this is effectively one large solid door with plywood on the outside. From this you can cut any size you want. They aren't too expensive also. prob no more than £50.00. I've just noticed that your 1920 x 772 is actually a 75" x 30". A 30" door is a standard measurement for a door. They are normally 78" high. Cutting 3" off is not a problem. You may wish to get a chippy or handyman into do it. It certainly wouldn't be a problem for someone that new what they were doing.

There's no door frame at the moment, though, so that's going to mean a bit more taken off an ordinary door.

Thanks to all who replied. It looks as though we'll have to get someone in as neither of us are handy enough to do a good job.

If you put an inch frame in the door opening will come down to 28". Although not as common, this is still an 'off the shelf' size. I know Howdens and Magnets do a 28" door and am pretty sure B & Q / Wickes do. Again it will just need to be trimmed top and bottom to fit. Th door should cost you no more than £20 and the frame with door stop and architrave about £25.00 Allow £15.00 for door furniture. Its probably half a days work to fit a frame and door so allow £80. Should cost £150 tops.
