Fix for network filesharing from Linux to Win7..

For those who have Ubuntu etc machines trying to access network shares on Windows 7 and possibly Vista boxes...

If you've done everything else (such as the smb.conf alteration in Ubuntu) and just get it perpetually asking for login details, uninstall Windows Live ID Sign In Assistant. For some reason, it alters the smb authentication on the Win7 box which causes it not to work - some claim it changes it to SSH.

The final headache in Ubuntu solved for me....can now access shared files and printers on the Win7 desktop.

I was having trouble connecting to a share on my Win 7 machine from Ubuntu 9.10. I finanlly got it working using the cifs method (not smbfs) here - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MountWindowsSharesPermanently
  • why not use samba works fine for me on ubuntu to win 7 as long as u are both on a router samba should autodetect when asked to

From what I've been reading (whilst trying to get my share working) you only need to use samba if you are sharing from linux/unix to windows, but not from windows to linux/unix.

Its OK if you want to mount permanent shares but I don't and to me, its not fixing the problem doing CIFS whereas altering the smb.conf file to change the network resolution order does the job with only having to remove the unnecessary Live Sign In Assistant from any problematic machines.

In fact given the complete lack of anything obvious WLSA does, one could be forgiven for thinking that MS introduced it to screw up SMB...
