Yeah thanks m8. But how would I get someone else's I mean your for example?

You cant unless I allowed you via VPN or Remote Access and then you hacked me, thing is mines DHCP or I would have to pay for my IP like https://www.google.com for example as if they didnt have a static IP I wouldnt be able to find google as the IP would keep changing, :)

I'm roughly following you but here's partly why I ask:

I was on a forum a few days ago and one of the members mentioned about my IP address being the same as someone else's that was abusive to him. Well it wasn't me but he didn't believe me. I was however at times using this forum at my work so it's possible someone else from my work was accessing the forum and that was why we had the same IP address.

The question is though how did he manage to view this IP address?

I think thats BS if you have Dynamic IP as its pretty hard to trace, If at work and your work have a Static IP address well maybe then but they would have to be cahoots with the forum to track the IP or did you give it out ages ago?

some forums actually have IP addresses appear in listings -saying this was osted from XX.XX.XXX

also administrators of forums do have extra info next to user names and sometimes this does include IP address

is a neat little app that blocks unwanted IP's from "seeing" you PC, i use it to block out all those annoying adverts on websites :-D makes the web alot faster.
Peer Guardian is used by those that use P2P and illegal file sharing and is supposed to block certain ip ranges which are known to be used by the feds with respect to law inforcement run by those losers at the MPAA.

AOL uses a huge cache so it may appear that you have the same IP as someone elses (infact multiple users).

Forum owners will be able to note this!

Would this be the case? When you post on a forum it's noting your ip address (from your web request/response), which isn't related to caching. Caching by an ISP occurs afterwards. Plus I wouldn't have thought caching on forums to be very common as they change a lot.

Chances of having a matching ip are very rare. If you have a dynamic ip it usually changes when your modem next disconnects/re-connects, or if pooled after a day or two when the pool is re-allocated.

A post on a forum requires a web request/response from your machine. Web servers will typically log the ip address from this, but sometimes so will forums. It's very easy to do.

If you and someone else are posting on the same forum from work, then it'll more than likely be getting logged under the same ip address. Hence the member probably assumed it was you (with multiple accounts) rather than two different people from the same location.

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=aol+cache+same+IP&btnG=Search&meta=

It isn't that rare really! Quite a few forum owners will ban a user based on IP, and then end up blocking 20 more to go withi it!!
