Looking for benefits

My 16 year old friend is about to start music college. Her father is self employed and is divorced from her mother. She lives with her father.

Are there any benefits she is entitled to whilst studying?

  • How about grants? Or that EMA thing, when I was at college my parents got a miniscule grant, and I got help with my bus fares, if thats any help. I'd advise her to get in touch with her college, they usually have someone there responsible for the welfare of students that should have all the relevant info.
I assume child benefit would be in payment, maybe ctc and maintenence?? I had a friend that used to get her child benefit for pocket money, she also had a little saturday job.

Has she considered a part time job and/or student loan?

I don't think student loans are available to 16 year olds, they are for uni students normally.

If the course is non-advanced, she will be able to put in a claim for EMA, see sticky at the top of this board. Her father in that case will still be able to claim Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit (CTC & EMA dependant on his income, but EMA paid to her if entitled).

She should check with the college what might be available.
