The owner is dead and how do we know it was her money???

..hmmm....well I dont think anyone needs to make excuses for O.P. - he can obviously make quite enough for himself (oh...whoops....I forgot....for his "friend"...the altar ego).

I suspect he made this post in the first place whilst under the influence of a little bit of "Christmas cheer" of the boozey variety...and has since realised that we will identify that he is the "friend" concerned and someone might know where he lives....

I doubt he'll be back again - he'll probably delete this whole thread and keep his ill-gotten gains. He was just wondering if he could admit how he had the money to the "world at large" and will, by now, realise that he couldnt admit it to a lot of us ....as either we would disapprove on the one hand or try to find an excuse to get our own hands on it on the other hand...
  • If you try to pay in £8,000 in cash to a bank account you can be sure that the bank involved will report the transaction to the relevant authorties as suspected money laundering.

I paid in 8.5k in cash last week and 2k in cash this week...

(proceeds of two private car sales). Was asked about the 8.5k, said 'car sale' and no eyebrows raised. Didn't even blink at me paying in the 2k in 50 pound notes...

Just off to read this thread right through

    - hoping that your friend has "done the right thing" and handed this money to the executors of the Estate of the previous owner....as its clearly been put there for safety by the previous owner and they werent able to "retrieve" it in time before they died. It wouldnt be fair if your friend tried to benefit from someone else's misfortune - if he did...then I would obviously question whether I wanted that sort of person as a friend myself..

EDIT; If your friend got questioned to see if this money was the "proceeds of a crime" - then the bank would be on exactly the right track....as thats exactly what it WOULD be if he kept it.

I love these kind of threads. Lots of people saying its illegal to keep but not one actually providing proof.

Keep the money. I would its £8000 the last owner cant spend it and the estate doesnt know it exists.

Unless someone can actually provide proof that a crime has been commited or would be commited in keeping the cash.

    Enjoy christmas:beer:

I suspect the reaction would have been somewhat different if a uranium fuel rod had been found in the attic.

Well.....your "friend" will know why if he notices any odd goings-on in his house. Personally - I wouldnt want to take the risk of the deceased owner of the house deciding to find out what ways they could to "get their own back" - ie poltergeist type activity.....and nope I'm not joking....as its exactly what I would do myself if I were the deceased person concerned....until the money got handed over to the owner/s I had decided on.

....just got these visions now of sitting there in "heaven" thinking "oh...nearly forgot ...its my 5pm appointment time for today.....time to go and smash up a few lightbulbs/move heavy furniture around/etc back at my old house...as they still havent handed over my money yet...."grin....

Seriously. You really have drunk too much sherry!!!:rotfl::rotfl:

I dont think that you can say the new owner is legally entitled to the money as the sellers would not be aware it was there. When you sell a house you list the items included in the sale and Im pretty sure "£8k in two coffee tins in loft" wasnt included in the list :)

If the "friend" hands the money over to the solicitors handling the sale I take it there are eligible persons to inherit the money, who got the proceeds of the house sale? If not it will go to the Treasury and hence any heir hunters that pick up on it being intestate will start tracking down beneficiaries- you can check out Bona Vacantia site for any intestate monies - my OH inherited a very decent amount of money through a check on the site and found a cousin had died without issue.

If you bought the house at auction then everything in it is yours. Is it different if you buy it off real people?
  • Lots of speculation on the thread.

Maybe it was hidden by a bank job. Maybe the notes are marked. Still fancy cashing it in at the bank on the sly?

I can't help but feel that the people suggesting to hand it in at the police station are looking for a way to appease their morals about just keeping it. Considering 99% of them have qualified the action by saying the woman is dead so not likely to claim it'.

At least some poeple have got the balls to come outright and tell you to keep it!

Can't see why - houses are put up for auction by real people also

How d'you know the sellers weren't aware the money was in the loft? Maybe they were eccentric and just left it up there. You'd be surprised at some people!

Anyway, the contents of the house after completuon becomes the property of the new owner.
