Ive been paid too much!?

Yesterday I was overpaid by roughly £300.

Ive recently started working in a restaurant part time as I am a student. Some of the tips i earn are paid to us in our monthly salary, ive been working for about 2 months and its the first time ive been paid. Ive not kept an exact diary of my hours or the tips ive earnt but Im pretty sure I have been overpaid. I REALLY want to keep the money and all my family and friends are telling me to keep quiet. What should I do? If im being honest calling my employer is the last thing Im going to do. The company is rich enough. :j

  • If they realise they have overpaid you they will reclaim it from you. Your family and friends don't appear to realise this. I thought the same when I was young and didn't know better (also naively thinking it was an xmas bonus as it happened in the december pay packet) and ended up living high on the hog in the month I was overpaid and really struggling in the month they clawed the overpayment back.

Contacting a supervisor you trust should be the first thing you do when you think your wages are wrong like this, ask them if there's a reason you have more money than expected and let them check it out for you. Sorry, but learn from my mistake please!

If they have made a mistake and have overpaid you then you are not entitled to keep it, no matter how much you want it. It's irrelevant how rich the company may be.

As Roberto says, if it is a mistake and they realise themselves they will recoup it from you (which might leave you short in future).
If they realise their mistake and they find out that you had deliberately not told them, even though you knew you'd be overpaid, then you may be subject to a disciplinary.
If you bring it to their attention and it turns out that they did make a mistake, your honesty may be remembered in future when it comes to promotions, bonuses, etc.

  • I think this is a wind up, someone trying to provoke a reaction.

If not then why come and ask for advice when you say you REALLY want to keep it, and the last thing you will do is ring your supervisor??

Keep it then and see how you REALLY like it when you are a thief and have to pay it back.

foxy-roxy, you could well be right.

OP, what does your payslip actually say?

If you think the post is designed to provoke a reaction then why throw words like "thief" around and therefore deliver a "reaction"?

It could be a "troll" or whatever. I know I wasn't trying to be dishonest when I made the same mistake as a young guy (notice the post is from a student), I was just stupid. There's nothing wrong with doing stupid things when you're young provided you learn from them.

If the company can't reclaim the money from your wages when, not if, but when they notice, i believe they can take you to small claims court for the money.

Can you get a CCJ for this kind of thing if it is strung out for long enough? Silly thing to ruin your credit rating for.

  • I'd contact your payroll people at the company and query why you think you were over-paid and in the meantime put the extra money on deposit and NOT SPEND IT!

You'll earn Brownie-points for being honest, you'll probably find out that the payment is correct if they've got you on the right tax-code and you've received the right tax-free allowance AND you'll have three hundred quid in savings. Result!

I don't think at all Foxy Roxy ever suggested that you were ever being dishonest.

I think her/his reaction was provoked by this stupid comment:

"I REALLY want to keep the money and all my family and friends are telling me to keep quiet. What should I do? If im being honest calling my employer is the last thing Im going to do. The company is rich enough. "
