Do you want to record internet radio and the like? If so, I use Radiotracker. It works very well.

Lots of free and shareware software out there to do this.
www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLD%2CGGLD%3A2004-29%2CGGLD%3Aen&q=audio+stream+grab&btnG=Search has loads.......
Personally I use Audacity. Works brilliantly, but ensure you have it setup to record in Stereo before recording.

My Creative external soundcard has an option to record what is being played so I use Audacity to record streams with the correct input selected.0

Ive just heard about two programs called Tunebite and Total Recorder but havent managed to try either. These have been around for a while as far as im aware and encode content that is being played through the sound card, I think. That was the general jist I got when reading about it earlier.
Might be worth seeing if theres any trials around for these two.0 -
Another vote for Audacity - excellent program!0

I also use radiotrackerYou can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.0

I use this freeware program, which records directly from your soundcard in realtime, & converts to an MP3 file, if your'e not going to burn to disc you might also need a media player such as VLC which is also freeware as Windows Media Player, doesn't seem to recognise these files although they are MP3 files. http://www.opcode.co.uk/opd2d/default.asp0
