Rejected for Virgin 0% card but not sure why? What did I do wrong?

Hey everybody
I wonder if anybody could help me. This morning I applied for Virgin's 16-month 0% credit card in the hope to balance transfer some of OH's credit cards that are about to lose the 0% interest facility.
I only have 1 credit card with Lloyds that has a £2000 limit and £0 balance and a small loan.
During the application it asked what my wages and OH's were (both work full-time) and how much I pay for rent. It also asked which other cards I had and what the credit limit and balance was, so I put the Lloyds details in. It didn't ask about store cards or loans or anything else like that.
Then at the end it said that I was not successful on getting a card on this occasion.
I was very, very surprised. I have never defaulted and have paid back my cards early and above the amounts required.
The only thing I'm wondering is that it did say right at the end that I could save lots of money by balance transfers from my other cards and did I want to do this, but as they are OH's cards I said 'no' and figured I could do this at a later date. Is this where I went wrong?
I'm just quite confused and surprised and wondered why I might have been rejected.
Just another note as well - I did check my Experian credit report earlier this year and it was fine and accurate. I have closed and received confirmation of closure of all other credit cards I had, which I have cleared this year.
EDIT: I have just found out that Virgin can be very funny and will reject you if you have a card with one of their group. I don't have any cards with this group, but I do have an Alliance & Leicester loan - could this be what has been picked up? I didn't tell them about this (wasn't asked).
