Can I move my emails?

Hi all. Merry Christmas :rudolf:

I have a new PC and need to copy across (or whatever) my emails from my old PC. It is a business PC, so there are lots, full of info I don't wish to lose. I suppose I could forward them, but really would rather keep them with the headers/addresses they have now. Is there a (easyish) way to do this? Thanks.

Either XP, Vista or Office have a tool that allows you to export everything and move it to a new PC. I used it about 9 months ago.

You can most likely copy them across, but we need to know what email client (Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail etc you are using - on both the old and new PC.

Copying across does not always work as certain bits may be contained in the registry, and is dependent on the mail program you are using.

Use transfer wizard in xp to copy xp to xp for xp to vista use the vista transfer wizard, it will should make a cd to to put into the XP machine.

Alternatively if you e-mail is Outlook Express, you can make the backup an exe file, put onto cd, put into new machine and run the exe using the following program.

  • Nightmare really, never works and always I need to go from one OS to another (XP-Vista or Vista-Win 7, or XP-Win7), the Transfer Wizard always throws a spanner in the process.

Win 7 will not work as the NEW procedure is to install software on BOTH PCs the OLD and the NEW, the catch is they are the same PC with a new hard drive.

Stored in a hidden folder something like Window\Users\Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\

    I'm not using Windows 7.

I am using Vista on both machines.

Thanks for path, will try and locate.
  • Ok, so I have transferred my LOCAL FOLDERS folder to my new PC desktop. I do have some emails in the NEW pc is there a way to MERGE the two, or do I have to write over the ones on the NEW pc?
  • Import them and should sort themselves out, after all they have time stamps, etc. have a feeling they come over as unread which is another pain.

Open Windows Mail on the new computer.
File >Import >Messages >Windows Mail 7 >Browse (to Local Folders that you have copied).
This will merge the old with the new. If you want the address book, then that is a separate import.
