How long can it take to register a default?

Hi
I have a defaulted bank account from a year ago that is registered as a default on call credit (default date Feb 09) but the same account is marked as 3 late payments then settled on equifax (with the delinquent amount still showing).
I'm hoping to pay off the amount so it won't look like a default on equifax (nothing i can do about call credit) but are they able or likely to change the account from settled to default in the future after so much time? If so I shan't bother.
cheers!
