Dysfunctional Sky+ box...

Our Sky+ box has recently started acting out, with the planner & anytime TV functions randomly disappearing.
We contacted Sky, who gave us a trick to reset it, but they warned it would keep happening as the box is faultly. The trick to reset it appears to have now stopped working & we have been told that we would need to pay £65 for a new box, as we do not have a warranty.
I'm not sure exactly how long we've had the box, but think it is roughly two years. To the best of our recollection, neither of us can recall being offered a warranty at the time of sale & I had always asssumed that the box remained the property of Sky & would be repaired or replaced if faulty, as this had been the case with our previous supplier.
Is there anything I can do under the Sale of Goods act, as I would expect something like this to have a pretty decent shelf life, or anything I can get out of them for not offering us a warranty at the time of sale?

The box is your property and originally came with a 12mth warranty. Under the Sale of Goods Act for you to get any remedy you would need to prove that the malfunction is caused by an inherent manufacturing fault rather than by wear & tear or user damage. The only way you can effectively do this is via an engineers report. TBH, it'll be less hassle just to stump up the £65 for a replacement box, or you could try the old threaten to cancel all Sky services trick unless they give you a replacement for free. Either way your replacement will likely be a refurb with a further 90 day warranty.0

When my Sky HD box gives up the ghost the contract will be cancelled with Sky. It strikes me that these boxes are not very well made and there are quite a few faults with them.
Last night picture freezing
How a machine that the engineer fitted and hasn't been moved since that day can devekop non inherent faults is beyond me.
As a matter of interest they normally start to pester you (a lot) at about 10 months onwards to take out the extended warranty.
Sorry just a bit of a rant...:o0 -

I've always worked on the principle that when the box conks out i cancel and come back as a new customer at a later date.
It just about always works out as cheaper to do this and i can live without sky - which i'm sure would horrify mister murdoch. :rotfl:0 -
Tell them you want to cancel, you will be put through to the cancellation team (retentions dept) who will then offer you a free box. If this fails just cancel, sell the box spares repair on ebay and sign up in partners name for Free SKY+HD, £50 M+S vouchers and £100 cashback via quidco.0
