Gas Fire Vent - Icy, Freezing, Constant Evil Draught from the legal air vent ....

Options
We have a gas fire here, with a back boiler. Little man came and serviced it and we had to put an air vent in the outside wall, that was signed off OK. Following year, another service and another bloke said the vent was inadequate - had to fit another/bigger vent.

Now, it's freezing. An icy cold, evil, persistant, constant, foot-numbing draught comes from the vent all the time (especially if the door's left ajar, which seems to be every 5 minutes). I have my foot right now 2' off the ground, I have put a big bag up 2' in front of the vent to try to divert the icy blast .... but I still can't feel my toes.

What's the deal with these vents? What's safe/what's not to do with it? It's horrendous.

P.S. Where I am, the weather isn't freezing, just this bloomin' vent. Weather here is dry, sunny and a fistful of degrees above freezing in daytime (probably 1-2 above freezing right now). But this draught is there all year round.

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Yeah, right. £196 to buy a full technical specification of a BS, that I'd have no chance of understanding.

Have a heart.... I've got two octogenarians in this icebox I'm trying to keep safe and warm.

No no..i agree,it is overpriced. I'm just saying that contained within said overpriced document are the ventilation requirements which apply to your gas appliance.

That wouldn't mean anything to me though.... even if it were free I'd not understand it. It'd be written in insider-knowledge-speak combined with public-sector-confusing-English ... and jargon.
  • The vent requirements are different for different appliances. I'm sure your RGI has fitted the correct size , however there are different types of vents, some with anti draught etc, maybe that might be an option though you would need an RGI to ensure you have the correct vent for your nbeeds, the link below might help with your queries

Agreed...the vent should be the right size, not oversized. Ideally it should be of the draught proof type and not just straight through the wall with an inner/outer vent and cavity bridging sleeve. I too have a permanent air vent though i tend to tape half of it over in Winter as i feel there is sufficient adventitious ventilation from other sources/vents. I do not advocate this as a solution!

I've just had a quick look through the Briitsh Standard; like most British Standards it is quite readable and clear, with any jargon used being defined at the begining of the document.

To size your vent, I would need to know the power of your fire.

If you have a suspended floor (wooden floor boards over a void) then you might be able to vent from the void as long as all your air bricks are clear and correctly installed.

I really dont care. I am not legally liable for comments i make. I choose to tape over half my vent, thats my responsibility. Others can do as they like. As i say,i dont advocate it as a solution. There are many properties which are over ventilated...'elf n safety ..n all that. Mine is over ventilated. I have two brick sized air bricks going straight through and into a kitchen cupboard and also a straight through plastic sleeved combustion air vent. I dont want a gale blasting through my kitchen.
