Hi, please can an electrician advise me re this:
When I put my hand on top of open dishwasher door (plugged in but obviously not running) I can feel vibration, also when my kettle is on the boil the work surface it sits on vibrates, is this normal, or a worrying sign of leaking current?

By vibrating I assume you mean a slight 'tingle'
It sounds as if something is not earthed correctly.0 -
yes a slight tingle, but slight enough to feel like vibration.Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0

As Cardew suggests it could be an earthing problem with the dishwasher however that doesnt quite explain the work surface (assuming its a usual kitchen worktop and not metal)Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0

It's not metal it's the Formica type stuff, the kettle is the type you can lift away from the base.
I have looked under the sink and I can see earth tags, I did ask at the time if the earth needed to be added to when the dishwasher was installed.Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0 -
The dishwasher will be earthed via its 13 amp plug(assuming the plug has been properly connected with 3 wires!)
It could be the earth in the house wiring that is faulty.
Anyway if you don't know what you are doing you need to get it sorted.
The danger would be that if any electrical appliance is not earthed and develops a fault, it will become live. If you touch it - you become the path to earth!!0 -
Yes I know cardew, this is what concerns me, I will get someone out.
Plug was on the dishwasher, it's new.Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0 -

Plug was on the dishwasher, it's new.
As you say dishwasher is new, unplug it and see if if the tingle vanishes, if it does, the d/washer is faulty somehowEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
Not so!
Assuming the 'tingle' is electrical, of course it will vanish if unplugged - where would it get its electricity from?
I meant the "tingle" on work top surfaces, of course the tingle will vanish from d/washer if unplugged
If it did vanish then the d/w is faulty somehowEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0
