This is the first winter that we have had our stove, we burn both wood and coal. Over the last couple of weeks, since we have had the stove on most nights, we've noticed that the glass is becoming very black very quickly. For example, I cleaned the inside of the glass before I lit it this evening, and within around 20 minutes it was almost entirely black. It's a shame, we can't see any fire! Does anyone know of any way to clean the glass that will keep it cleaner for a bit longer?

Has it got any worse than any other time.
Causes damp wood, or the air wash down the door is not open, burn the stove hotter if you can always try to have a flame.
Is the wood to near the glass so soot clings to the glass?
 Don't let your stove smoulder
If ours gets black while lit then I use a sheet of newspaper to wipe it then burn the paper. be careful as the glass is hot.
is it worse when being lit as there is no heat in the stove? The measure of love is love without measure0

Your either not burning the right stuff or not operating the vents correctly to burn hot enough. Dig your instructions out and re read them. They should explain how to avoid this by burning the fuel more cleanly and avoiding residue build up.

Did you say it was OK before. I which case your burning technique was OK previously. What's changed? I suspect you're on to a batch of damp wood. Bring some in to the house warm it up an dry it out. If its already fully seasoned, a couple of days should do it.
Cleaning the glass cheapest - damp news paper and ashes, polish off with dry newspaper.
Wire wall might be a bit argessive, isn't that a fence, non taken. 0 0

The only thing that's changed is that we're using it more often now that the weather's colder. But I suspect that damp wood is the problem.
