Hi guys

I have just been given a Canon EOS 1000D for Christmas and I am learning how to use it now. I am not very techie but love taking pictures and always have my camera with me when I do anything with the kids.

It looks really good but I can't seem to figure out if you can have the LCD display on while you take the photo or if you have to look through the viewfinder. The LCD screen just displays the mode that the camera is in.

I don't particularly want this feature but I just thought I would check if it was available on my camera.

Thanks very much

Unfortunately you can't do this. You can only take pictures through the viewfinder and display on the screen when playing back.
 Can anyone explain to me how to put a signature here?
  • The Canon 1000D has live view, according to Amazon..

Do you have a 'live view' button? I suggest reading the manual to find out how to turn it on.

However.. with an SLR camera, it's usually best to just use the viewfinder

Yes it's called Live View, but you have to enable it in the menus, and when activated, the mirror will flip up and you'll be limited to how you can focus.

A SLR with Live View can either show the image via the viewfinder (which most people will use) or via the screen, but the mirror has to flip up out of the way for the latter. A SLR works very differently to a compact which can have the screen enabled all the time as there is no prism or mirror reflecting the image to the viewfinder.

Look in the manual for Live View and the associated settings, press the Set button to go into Live View. Also look at the Custom Functions 7 (type of auto-focus) and Custom Function 10 for menu control. All in the manual.

Live View is really only good for macro and tripod shots, for normally shooting it isn't much use.
  • Thanks very much for your replies.

I did look in the manual before posting and found the information about Live view but the option doesn't seem to be there on my menu buttons so I thought that maybe it wasn't applicable to my model.

The Set button activates it I mentioned above...
  • A DSLR is designed to be used properly.
Liveview does work, but IMHO doesn't use the camera to its fullest potential :)

So professional macro photographers and still life photographers aren't using it properly?! There is a place for it... especially in stills and macro with critical focus.
  • I've got a liveview screen that can fold out and move.. you can take some stunning pictures from the floor by articulating the screen correctly.. makes for some fun toddler photos

    Live-view can be very handy
