Jigsaw problem

I'm trying to cut some hardboard with a jigsaw. It's a fresh blade, but even cutting just 4mm hardboard, the saw wants to wander all over the place. I can't cut a straight line. I tried working against a straight edge, but the saw still wants to deviate, the blade bends, and the cut isn't straight.
Am I missing something? Should I go out and buy a circular saw?
Thanks

Bet you haven't got the hardboard stable enough and its wobbling all over the place. Use a handsaw.

no jigsaw is designed to cut long straight lines. the right tool is a proper circular saw.
no way would i use a jigsaw to cut say a 4ft long section.
no matter how thick.Get some gorm.0 -
It's a Black & Decker saw with B & D blades. It's quite old, and I don't think it's a high end model. Although I've had it a long time, it's not had a huge amount of use - no way it should be worn out.
I made a table using chipboard on top of an existing table. Then I put a plank of wood on top (my straight edge) and clamp the whole lot together at both ends.
I'm leaning towards Ormus' view

i used to use my old B&D jigsaw loads before but always ended up with similar probs and poor finished edges. But now bought a proper semi decent handsaw (stanley one ~£10), which is easier to cut with and gives much better finish!0

Ive been a joiner/carpenter for 24yrs , still learning and will never stop learning.Bit harsh of you in my opinion.Have you ever heared of the saying "more than one way to skin a cat"?
Hardboard can be cut successfully with a jigsaw(not reciprocating action)using a fence or straight edge, fine blade and going slowly,It can also be cut with a panel saw(fine toothed) ,power saw and indeed a stanley knife too.It can even be successfully cut with a router too.........:rolleyes:0 -
