Halifax Credit Card Repayments Cover

Hi all,

New here and want to say thanks for compiling and having such a fantastic and informative site.

As per post title, I would appreciate any advice. To cut a long story short, I took out this cover several years ago and have never needed to claim but i am now in a situation where I do.

I left work back in may due to depression and to unofficially begin caring for my nan as she was diagnosed with cancer. As I was not physically caring for her for 35 hours a week, more just playing a supporting role as and when, I did not qualify for carers allowance but with what money I had saved continued to pay credit card and loan payments monthly.

I had no choice but to sign on at the job centre in october as I had no income and therefore would need a job to continue to pay my debts. My nan had gone to live with my mum temporarily at this time and so I was available for work.

My nan came back home late november and as her cancer is now quite advanced, she needs a full time carer and asked me if I would fill this role for her. I came off jobseekers and have now began claiming carers allowance, as of december.

As per my ccrc policy, it states that i need to be in employment prior to becoming a carer to claim, and as explained, my situation did not quite pan out as this.

Does anybody have any experience with this? If I did not need to claim I would not, but my job seekers allowance, and now my carers allowance is used to repay my credit card and loans every month, and constantly pay overdraft charges.

If someone could help me I would truely appreciate it, or point me in the right direction. It means everything to mean to care for my nan, but I am afraid that at 25, and running up so much debt for cost of living, I have a bleak future ahead of me.

Thanks again,

J

  • If you left your job you would not be eligible to claim.
If you had been signed off by a doctor you might well have a case.
  • I was signed off by my doctor prior to handing my notice in and was signed off up until the day I quit. thanks

I doubt that you will be able to claim for depression.

Although it is a covered condition the get out clause will usually be something along the lines of needing to be under the supervision of a hospital consultant.

Given that most depression sufferers can't get an NHS referral for counselling the likelihood of getting to see the top shrink at the local infirmary is slim.

Check the small print on the policy before taking this as gospel.

(and don't forget to click on <THANKS> for Jones MUFC's post above!)

Therefore you may have a case to make a claim from the day you were signed off (after any period not covered eg 15 days or a month) to the day you resigned but not after you left your employment.
IMO it does not look good.

So the fact I am now a full time carer for my nan and the only income I have is £53 a week will not factor into any of this at all? And putting my repayment recover to one side, there is no other help I can get?
