taxing a car and DVLA requirements urgent help needed
Hi can anyone help
partner has been given a loan of a vehicle
he has all the documents and did the insurance and has the certificate
took them to the post office to sort out the tax this lunch time and found out that as the car is registered in the name of someone that is not named on the insurance they wont issue the tax
say it is something to do with if he is stopped then the police wont recognise the insurance as the person that owns the car is not named on the insurance
is this correct?
so say if someone was banned from driving or had not yet passed their test or hold a licence, but were given a car or won one..... then wanted to let someone else drive it they wouldn't be able to as the registered keeper would be someone that is not able to get insurance
surely this can't be right?
can anyone help as partner was trying to get tax sorted as he is driving to kent on Sat to pick up his 2 young children that he has not seen for 10 weeks (whole other story)
thanks in advance

the owner of the car must have insurance on the vehicle himself. The idea is lets say the car got stolen while parked up and in your partners possession, his insurance will not pay out. The reason will be he doesn't have a interest in the car as the car does not belong to him and the owner of the insurance must be insured on the vehicle and claim himself. This is what i was told by the police.
Its seems odd to me that the post office did not give you the tax if the log book was there even if it is in a different name, they usually dont even seem to check properly. I guess you got unlucky. I discovered they wont give tax unless owner of the car is insured when my friend got his tax, as the car was in his mums name the DVLA office gave us a lot of trouble.
One thing you can do is take off the V5C2 and fill it in as if the car was being sold to him, however i wouldnt recommend this. It will get the job done! LOL
Also some insurance companys dont seem to insure if the car is not in the proposers name and if they do they make it more expensive.
BTW this is only what i have been told by an officer, so take the information which ever way you like.0 -
Just fill out the new keepers section in pencil, take them this and then rub it out when you get out.0

most post offices will not entertain a printed out certificate
can you not get the insurer to send it out special delivery if you pay?0 -
If you completed the new owners section of the log book to tax the car then the post office should retain this part of the log book and forward it to the DVLA as procedure. So using pencil wont work, it should be in black ink aswell.0

Sounds like absolute poppycock. What about all the 100,000's of leased company vehicles out there? Certainly every haulage company I've worked at who lease the vehiles insure them themselves whilst the vehicle is still registered under the leasing company name.
The fact the insurance wouldn't pay out to the owner if the car was stolen is completely irrelevent in the eyes of the Road Traffic Act.0 -

Actually you're wrong. The left hand A4 sized page is sent to DVLA, the new keepers suppliment is exactly that, a supplimet for the new keeper whilst waiting for the new log book to arrive.
The request for Black ink applies to the left hand side of the document going to DVLA, there is no requirement of black ink in the new keeper suppliment. Also this method does work, I have done it many times0 -

Lease cars usually include road tax for the term of the lease, so the tax discs will be posted to the company before the tax runs out, and bought and paid for by the leasing company (although the person leasing the car really pays for it in his monthly fee).

They don't keep the new keeper supplement when you tax the car as I believe that is what you show to the police if you get pulled over and you haven't got your new V5. I've taxed 2 cars previously with new keeper supplement and I was given it back in both instances.0

buy it online? will be posted to the registered keeper, and as long as it shows on the database you are fine.0
