Well we've put off making an impulse purchase for xmas but i'm now back onto it trying to make the right decision. I think I've decided against a DSLR completely as they're too high tech for me right not so I think it's a case of mid-range compact (unless anyone suggests different?!)

Plenty of folk are still recommending the Panny TZ7 and there are plenty for sale on ebay etc..

Couple of questions... should I be worried about lack of manufacturers warranty?

And tech question... with the HD video on this camera, can video be played back as you would normally i.e. plug into laptop and once files tranferred to windows media - play? I've read somewhere something about needing AVCHD-compatible editors and playback devices for this movie format??? In English does that mean, I wouldn't be able to simply play the movies on my laptop?

Finally, any thoughts on the Canon Ixus range compared with the TZ range?

The Panasonic I'm looking at is a ZS3 (the US version of the TZ7) so just want to make sure it could be used to it's full potential over here. I would be using it with an Acer Aspire 8930 laptop. Just don't want to make an expensive mistake!
