Contents insurance for post grad student

Options
My daughter is trying to get a better quote for contents insurance but is finding many companies will not quote at all. She has been with Endsleigh for the last 6 years, but would like something less expensive if possible. Her situation is..

Full time post grad living in own flat (no mortgage)
Age 24 1/2
Single
Part time uni job doing tutoring/lab supervision/exam supervision/marking/occasional lecturing
Only contents required, building is already covered
Flat is on 2 levels ...raised ground floor and garden level

Some will not quote due to roof construction, which is slate on the old part of the building and flat on the new part which her flat is in. I don't understand how this affects contents insurance, she has another 4 flats above her.

Age and occupation are also a problem.
Any suggestions

  • I am also a p/t PG student, but i'm living in rented accomodation, so any answers to this question would be great.

I used saxon insurance when I was an undergraduate, that was pretty cheap but I'm not sure if I count as a student this time around.
  • Hi there

If your daughter is doing work at the uni, she may find it better if she puts her part time occupation down as her "main" job and her post grad work as a second job. If she goes through the price comparison sites and finds the best quote, she can then call them (or arrange for the company to call her) and explain her position to make sure they are happy with what she's done.

If they ask how many hours study she does, she only needs to declare the number of hours she's actually attends uni for that purpose, rather than the number of hours she works from home.

Be honest with the insurer, but paint the picture in the best light. "I'm working part time at a uni as a lecturer and tutor and studying for my post grad in my spare time. My actual ocupation is lecturer. Is that ok?" would seem to be an honest statement for your daughter to make.
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.
