Home and contents deals

I have been with Barclays for 2 years and quite happy with their prices. I have building and contents covered for £500,000 and contents up to £50,000. I live in a 2 bed semi.

I have been quoted for a second year for £261 but I have had a circular from Churchill who we have our car insurance with offering "It could be only £242". Does this sound like a good offer or are their better options with cashback etc ? I find it all a real drag having to compare every year.

  • Hi there

Barclays are just a broker. You will probably find that the actual insurer is Aviva and although I would quite happily insure with them for cars, I will not take an Aviva household policy until they review the suppliers they use for building works and the like (Asprea are particularly poor).

Follow the advice of the Best Buy article on home insurance at the top of this page and do look for cashback. Some companies are offering massive incentives to go to them direct. Whatever you do, find out who the actual insurer is before you take the policy.
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

If you really find it a drag then why bother shopping around for £20??

But it might be worth making sure you really are happy with the cover you have.

Does this mean that if you need work to be carried out that an insurance company can dictate who carries out the work? If so, how do we find out who uses good suppliers for building works and who don't? I just assumed that if work needed to be done as a result of a claim, that you can choose who you want to use. I've just taken out home insurance with Sheilas Wheels, and spent ages comparing other insurance policies and levels of cover against Sheilas Wheels. I didn't even know companies dictated who carries out building works.

Edit: Having read someone elses post, it sounds like Asprea are surveyors (is this correct, please). If we need to find out who insurance companies use, is it a case of ringing them up, or can we find out online somewhere? Do you know if Sheilas Wheels use Asprea, please?
