Lost keys
The key to my 1997 ford escort encore is lost. I've been told that I have to get the whole key system changed unless I have the key number. This will cost upwards of £650 of which my insurance co will cover £500. The car is not worth £650 by itself!
I haven't really got a problem with the insurance co paying and there is stuff in the car that I'm unable to get to, so would like it opened at least! It just seems an enourmous amount of money and work to be able to open the door and turn on the engine. The car doesn't have any central locking or anything.
Just want some reassurance that this is the only alternative really...

There are destructive ways of getting in (drilling locks, etc) - depends how much you value the car.0

Still wouldn't be able to drive it tho - I really just want a new key for the original lock! I have this horrible thought that all the locks will be changed and new sparkly keys at great expense and the original bu**gers will turn up!0

If it doesn't have an immobiliser you can probably start the engine without a key too - but that'll not exactly be very secure to leave somewhere :rotfl:0

Sounds dodgy to me. Take the VIN to your nearest Ford dealer, along with proof of ownership.
I wouldn't be surprised if some third-parties can provide a similar service.0 -

or fit a full lock/ECU set
note: i am not saying this exact set will fit your car0 -
Where in West Sussex are you? Don't waste money with the dealer and don't waste time faffing around with lock sets. I can recommend 2 very good locksmiths who should be able to get into the car without causing damage and will cut and program a key to your immobiliser for around £250 (possibly less). One is in Guildford and the other in Gatwick. I will give you their details if it is any help.0

Could you perhaps try a scrap yard see if you can get a replacement there.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.
