Look! Bottom line, YOU are the legal owner go and report the car as stolen to the police (and push this, don't take any bull with them saying "it's a civil matter" it's theft!) make a statement to this effect!
Tell the DVLA that you own the car and are the legal owner of the said car, and that you have not sold it! it has been stolen!
Put a block on any transfer of ownership.
The only thing you have done wrong is being too trusting with the garage.
Good luck hope it works out for you.0 -

The above is correct.
You are a little at fault for leaving it at the garage for so long, I work at a garage and an engine for this car could be sourced the same day. The garage or your friend is talking nonsense when they say the can not find one for months. If it were a Ferrari then I would believe it.Google gives you answers use it.........0 -

Try to remember not everyone is as car savvy as you are. The OP doesn't work at a garage and may not know the first thing about cars nor engines so doesn't know the first thing about sourcing garages so put her trust in someone she thought did.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -

but surely driving such a common car would rings bells!!!!
I am not agreeing with the garage for selling it but leaving a car at the garage for 5-6 months??? this is a little too much.
The op has internet access so no reason why he could not do some homework and get some details for local scrap yards and source and engine
If the op had not had a letter from the DVLA how much longer would it be parked at the garage?????????.Google gives you answers use it.........0 -

Perhaps the OP just has a trust issue in that she gives too much trust in people. My OH is a mechanic so am very well versed in all things cars so would expect the car to be done in a week, but before he managed to infect me with car knowledge I wouldn't have had a clue about how an engine would be sourced regardless of how common or unique a car is and as it was a friend of a friend then I probably would have trusted them.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -
So is it the scrapyard trying to claim ownership, or the poor sod they sold the car onto?
If it's been sold to an individual then what should happen is they will have to give the car back (probably including the engine) and will then have to take action against the scrapyard for selling them a stolen vehicle. Shouldn't be too hard for the person to get their money back.
You can then sit back and let the garage and the scrapyard fight it out over the cost of the engine and work done on the car? Do you really care about either company, probably not.
End result, you could end up with a new engine for free.0 -
How on earth is it viable to put a new engine in a T-Reg car?0

Hehe me neither!
I also still fail to see how Trollilator thinks I'd profit from having my own property back?
He/she/it probably in reality doesn't believe that at all.
The special MSE trolls just take the opposing view to an OP.
They used to be insulting to posters but when that got stopped with certain users being banned UKTim29/Linus etc so they've stopped doing that now. They are easy to spot though as you can change your username but not your posting style.;)
The latest trick is just to see how many genuine replies they can get from an OP when posting continually opposing views which are often totally unrealistic but not offensive enough to get reported.
If you keep replying to someone posting total rubbish then you're probably enjoying it as much as they are.

So it makes more sense to just throw it away?
So much for recycling and green credentials.
I suppose it's just peoples unwillingness to learn basic mechanics which stops them?
Cars are very cheap in this country compared to many others which I suppose is partly why there is a throw away attitude.
Why would you wan to dispose of a car that was otherwise sound just because one part had broken? If you can get en engine swapped cheaply enough why not?
The most money saving thing you can do is drive a cheap old car and service it yourself.0
