did have have a photocard licence which he's lost? Or did he only have the paper part to begin with? If he doesn't have a photocard licence, he'll be fine - my father-in-law only has a paper one and had no problems in Vegas or elsewhere. If he has a counterpart licence which went along with a photocard, then I'd imagine he might have a problem. Just looked at my paper counterpart licence and it does say both parts must be produced when required.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
  • No, he has only ever had the paper part of it. He was wondering if he needed to upgrade it rather quickly so thats positive news.

    many Thanks.

He will need his passport + the paper licence to rent...so be sure he has his passport on him when he's picking up the car...easy if you're at the airport, easy to forget if not. :)

  • I will make sure to tell them, thanks again. With my dad it would be very easy to forgot one thing or another. x

I'm confused as to what you are saying - maybe you are too.

The paper and card parts should have arrived together when he applied for his licence. Without both he cannot legally drive in the US (or here either come to that). The car hire company may also have problems - often they are happy with just the card but they do have the right to ask to see both parts and many do. Just the paper bit will confuse them.

Or are you saying he has an old style licence that predates plastic cards? In that case he should be fine - the paper bit is the complete licence if that is the case.

Yeah. tell me about it. Had to walk back from Circus Circus to the Strat to fetch mine :(
There's never a deuce when you need one...

Oh, and I have a photo licence. I've rented cars probably getting on for 50 times in the US and never been asked for the paper section. These have been with Avis and Dollar.
  • Thanks for the reply guys, appreciate it :T

He has only ever had the paper part, and has never upgraded to the photcard one. I am hoping from this thread that, that means he will be good to book a hire car for one week?

Parents, stook in the day, i dont know . You gotta love it, but if its wrong hopefully we can get him a new one if needs be before Jan 16th when we go.

General feeling here is, he will be ok with the paper one he has always had and never updated to the plastic one?

    Thanks again.

he will be fine so long as he has photo ID (passport) to take with him along with the original paper licence he has.

  • My hubby lost his wallet last week and ordered a replacement license on line and came in 3 days so should be pretty quick if he decides to get one.

Oh.. and of course he found the wallet 3 days later in the car which he assured me he had searched from top to bottom......!

We had that with OH's passport rose :(

Only thing I would say though OP, is get dad to check his licence is still valid as my OH found his old paper one was actually only a couple of weeks until it was out of date.
