broadband - problems since router

I have broadband via telewest connected from the cable modem to a router (Sitecom DC202v5 cable router). Since the router was put in I have random, but not infrequent drops in the connection.
Whilst this is merely annoying on the main machine when running pandora it is crippling on my work laptop which requires a VPN (cisco v4.0.1) in order to be able to use my home broadband, due to the admin locking users out of the proxy settings.
In fact simply during the time it took to type this + 5 mins quick forum search I've had to re-enable the lan & reconnect the VPN twice.
Is this a problem with the broadband? the router? or just something I'll have to live with if I want to use this laptop?

Still wish I could buy a TARDIS instead of a house!

Difficult to answer, it could be any of those. Check to see if there is a firmware upgrade for the router.
One thing you could try is to reduce the MTU on the router to 1400, as VPN adds extra data to each packet to encrypt it, which then makes the packet too big with standard settings, which causes retransmission of data. which slows things down.

The cisco client comes with an mtu tweaker to change the work laptop, and you can use this to change the home PC.

i had the same problem with telewest last week magoogy and the only way i got it fixed was to complain every day until a got a ring back from a manager not teamleader , they said it was my pc put it was the ubr fault and afecting 1500 poeple and they want you to do loads of tests which they can do at there end ,they do not support routers so when you ring make shaw the modem is plug into the pc not the router if it do's the same on it ,
still getting high pings and very slow speeds at peek 26kbs to 50kbs on a ten mb put pages open alright nowthere or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff0
