I received a telephone call from Barclaycard saying that I had missed the November payment and would I set up a direct debit so that it wouldn't happen again - I said I'd look into my affairs and get back to them. On looking into it I found I had not received the November bill so phoned them up and paid all I owed plus interest plus a late payment of £12. The fellow at Barclaycard said there had been a postal strike but seemed to say this without a thought and I felt unsure that he was telling the truth. On mentioning this to a friend they realized that they hadn't received the November bill either and on phoning them up was told that they would send another bill but that it was late so undoubtedly they too will be charged interest plus £12.
Have many people been 'conned' by Barclaycard recently?? Maybe they are in trouble?

Does anyone think it unlikely that two out of two bills were not received I am unaware of anything else being mislaid in the post. Barclaycard seem to be having a very good runup to Christmas.

My advice is demand your late payment fee back as they never sent you the bill. How can you be expected to pay a late payment fee if they never sent you the bill. It is upto them to bill you each month and to ensure you get the bill. Paying by DD is just a way they can sherk their responsibilities.0

I NEVER get a paper bill from Barclaycard, I do it all online. Barclaycard send a text and email alert when a statement is ready, maybe thats something anntargett should look at it to stop this happening again. Royal Mail have been known to lose mail sometimes.
How is paying by DD shirking their responsibilties
I don't think Barclaycard are fussed how you pay - by post, direct debit or online. 0 -

For occasions like this, when the system cocks up and does not send the bills... If that is indeed what has happened. Trying to get you to setup a DD saves them the hassle of making sure you receive your bill.0 -
Are they deeming the payment late or was it missed??
I would check your credit reports also!!!0 -
we had same trouble lost our payment charged us this went on for months but when we contacted financial ombudsman, suddlenly Barclays fond the money and repaid the late fees.worth a try0

Barclaycard provides adequate online services. There's no need for anyone with a pc to rely solely on postal statements.People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0

As consumers,we should have a choice of what method we use.Just because they provide on online service does not mean they can !!!!-up and offer an excuse that it is the customers fault for not using their online services.0

I don't think anyone is saying consumers have to use online services because they are offered - ultimately it is the account holder's responsibility to ensure that their bills are paid on time. There have been several UK postal strikes so to simply say that Barclaycard did not send out the bill is making a wild accusation. They may not have done, but I don't see anywhere on these posts that this is what the BC representative said!
From the number of people that post on this site (clearly having access to internet) but refuse to use online services, it makes me wonder if they are looking for excuses not to settle their bills - as AJ2703 says, set up a DD for the minimum amount and that way you never miss a payment and can always pay more.0 -
Given that it isn't clear whether or not the bills were correctly despatched, I'd suggest going in with a "demand" is inappropriate. My advice is demand your late payment fee back as they never sent you the bill.
A polite request in the name of goodwill would be more sensible, and more likely to succeed.
I actually have a pop-up diary note that reminds me to pay the bill. T&Cs still place the responsibility on the account holder to pay the bill if a statement isn't received. How can you be expected to pay a late payment fee if they never sent you the bill.
While I would agree that the FOS would most likely side with a customer if a bill is not despatched, they will not find the bank liable for any wrongdoing if a post office employee is chucking the mail in to his shed each day.
It is always the borrower's responsibility to repay their debts on time. Direct debit is one of many ways a borrower can take that responsibility. It is upto them to bill you each month and to ensure you get the bill. Paying by DD is just a way they can sherk their responsibilities.0 -
Nah... in this era of whistleblowers and bloggers, I can't believe they'd deliberately do this. Considering I have a massive balance on a balance-for-life deal, they're missing an obvious target in my case!
I'm running about 5 credit cards with balances at the moment and I'm not into DDs. I run a table/diary note system to make sure I check balances and payments due. I really think it's dodgy relying on something to turn up in the post as a way of reminding you to pay, particularly as the consequences can be quite serious (penalties, loss of special deals, notes on the file etc). Also it means I can spot any fraud faster.
If it's a one-off, I'd just ask them nicely to refund the penalty and leave it open as to what happened.0
