It's 11 degrees in the living room this morning and 9 in the hall where the thermostat is.

I'm not even wrapped up and I'm fine. Don't feel cold, else I'd put the some more clothes or the heating on. What was the point of this thread again? ;)
  • With Gas being so expensive, I tend to be pretty frugal with the central heating.

The heating is always off overnight and when I wake up. If it's too cold for no heating, I'll perhaps put the room stat (which is in the living room itself) on 13. If it's a weekend and I'm up late, I might treat myself to 15 :)

But, this weather I've always got a fleece top on for warmth in the house.

I use around 7500KWh of Gas per year, though it should be said I don't bother with hot water (I just use my kettle, and my shower heats the water).

Also we are going away for a full week over xmas so that should help. What temp should I leave the thermostat on whilst we are away? 16? 14?

Would it not be better to turn the water off and drain the water pipes, and turn boiler off too?

Wow- my digital themomter states 19.3c and this is ample, I have the thermastate set at 17c and spent exactly £9.95 last week on gas for a 2 bed flat.
  • My Honeywell thermometer definitely isnt precise, but i am able to set a seperate temperature for my bedroom at night which saves a significant amount of energy and cost. Thermal pyjamas help too!

    Hi there

Quick question on this subject, my GCH is controlled by a honeywell wireless control situated in my front room. I tend to chose 21 degrees and find this to be spot on!

The TRV in each room is set on max (5), having been done so by my plumber when he installed the system back in October.

How does the temp I choose on the controller differ if I adjust the TRV's in different rooms? Not quite sure how they relate to each other!

    Sorry if im being thick!

For a week away?! No! You could end up with a much bigger bill from a plumber than the couple of quid of gas you might use if the house got too cold and the heating came on.

Draining the system every time you go away is just insane!

If you correctly refilled the system, the inhibitor (stops corrosion) alone would cost you a tenner. I doubt you would use even half the amount of gas with the thermostat set to 10/15C.

The wireless stat will control the temperature at which the boiler turns on & off to keep your front room at a comfortable level. The TRVs will control the temperature at which the individual radiators turn off when the rooms have reached their desired temps. There shouldn't be one on the living room radiator if that's where the thermostat is - or if there is it should be set to max. The others in the house call all be adjusted down to whatever you feel is a comfortable temperature for that room - i..e number 3 for bedroom, lower for a spare, unused room.
  • I have Storage heaters so no thermostat, there is no heating in the bathroom or kitchen. I keep the bedroom off, I only heat the living room in the evenings

I dont see the problem with wrapping up warm and getting blankets on- after paying £1400 keeping it at a "comfortable heat" last year..enough was enough! Soon as the snow passes its going back off .... it really is a luxury to have it on!
