A DSLR should not have live view, video recording, face warp, HD ready, wifi internet access or god knows what other stupid gimics.... It's serious bit of kit designed for one purpose.... Taking bloody good quality photographs!

Throughout history, no mutli purpose device has ever beat a device made/designed specifically for one exact purpose, at least not at the same point in time or for any length of time.

Many stills and macro photographers rely on Live View, so for someone to say a DSLR shouldn't have it, raises an eyebrow or two in the "advice giving stakes", I speak as a professional photographer!

Top end sports photographers use WiFi and encryption grips on DSLRs to beam shots back to studios in a second too, gadgets have their place in the professional arena.

Some small studios are also now starting to shoot HD video for production using the new wave of DSLRs. With good lenses they leave camcorders in the dust.

Personally I don't use Live View much, but it is a useful feature if you are looking for critical focus on a tiny area and are obviously shooting a still year - hence it's probably most useful for macro photographers, but many purists don't use it.

Do you really need video recording? I don't use it at all on my DSLRs and wouldn't because video isn't of interest to me, I use SLRs for commercial and wedding photography, and my area is stills. I have yet to meet a stills photographer who is using the video features of new DSLRs. For me a still image captures a memory much better than a moving one. But each to their own.

Personally I'd go for the Canon, but the Nikon is just as good. I've been using Canons for many years, so really like their controls, setup and feel. The Canons and Nikons are setup differently, so try both and see what you think in the shops.

Then buy from the best retailers with the lowest prices listed here: www.camerapricebuster.co.uk

PS The £200 400D is a bargain if you mention it, team it with a decent lens and you'll notice virtually no difference between the 500D, except Live View and Video!

Thankyou for your helpful reply, i am swaying more to the 500d, but then thinking £200 is a bargain (my friend is sellin it, she is a professional too so i know its been well looked after)
I think the best thing is to do as you advise and try them both in the shops before i decide.

    Thank for your help.
