where do i start - tech-thickie

hoping to get my new Dell 5150 (BT shop Bargain) out of the box tommorrow but before i mess everything up - is there an idiots guide anywhere on this site to guide me throught it - i have never done it before. the main area i am worried about is connecting my broadband (ntl) and also getting stuff from my old PC transferred across. I will also have to at some point have to have a wireless connection as DD is having her own PC now. i have also been given a disk of Office professional 2000 (copy) and was wondering if i could install it alongside Works which is on it already.
or should i just get someone in and leave well alone - how wrong can i get it?

all advice greatly appreciated

get it out of the box and set the PC upand make sure it is all working ok before you try anything else

    if ok then

    1) find the Cd for installing the NTL modem and your user -id For NTL and password

    2) insert the CD and go through the install, pluggin the NTL modem on when required

    3) when installed the Cd will either prompt you to enter your user-id etc at that point or there will be a log-on box (not installed NTL so not sure what you get :)

if possible burn everything from the old PC that you need to a CD and copy it to the new one that way.

Office can be installed alongside works if you realy want to

if you want to go wireless later then at some point you need to buy a wireless Router/Modem ( Maplins ar doing some cheap ones at the moment as are PC world ) for DSL (not ADSL) as you are with NTL. these cost about £39 -£49 and th Maplin ones came with the wireless adapter you need for the PC :)

There's no need to worry about installation. Once we have installed the Broadband Internet cable connection to your house either via the standalone cable modem unit or digital TV set-top box, we provide you with a Broadband Installer CD-Rom and easy to follow instructions for you to get up and running. If you have any problems with your Broadband installation, you can call freephone Technical Support or visit our online help at www.ntlworld.com/help

Don't worry about that, if you need help people on the forums will help!
the main area i am worried about is connecting my broadband (ntl)

If your using your ntl broadband connection right now - best advise is to use the network cable\ethernet cable (probably a light blue cable) that came with the ntl modem, all you do is stick in to the back of the new pc (assuming you don't want to use the old pc). If you're using the USB cable then wnce you've setup your new pc, plug the usb cable in from the back of your old pc into your new pc and it will ask you to "install drivers" this is where you need to have your ntl modem cd at hand, stick it into the new pc and search for the drivers and it will find it. (ethernet option is simpler, quicker and better!)[/QUOTE]
and also getting stuff from my old PC transferred across.
Do you have a cd writer on your old pc? the easiest is to simply burn all the files you need on to a cd and then copying onto the new pc. We can "network the pcs but that will be more hassle - we'll deal with this later?!
I will also have to at some point have to have a wireless connection as DD is having her own PC now.

Do you have a wireless router for this?
i have also been given a disk of Office professional 2000 (copy) and was wondering if i could install it alongside Works which is on it already.

Yes you can but if you have office, you don't really need Works - but it's a copy it's upto you if you want to install it - afteral you didn't buy it!
or should i just get someone in and leave well alone - how wrong can i get it?
