Phone Line Question

I have just bought a house, I don't want to incur any of the BT phone/line rental bills prior to the purchase - what do I need to do?
Secondly I plan to rent out the house early in the new year - I am going to disconnect the phoneline and let the tennants setup a new one if they desire, can this be done?
Thanks in advance.

If you set up a BT line in your property you will be tied to at least a 12 month contract so if you wish to cease the line early in the new year you will have to pay the appropiate breaking of contract fee.0

Don't do anything. Just let your tenants organise the connection themselves in due course.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Thanks Guys.
I called BT this morning and they confirmed the the line is inactive and has been for some time so I will leave this as it is. It cost £160 to reactivate a line.
I was wondering if there are any BT representatives on here who could double check that my line is inactive to ensure that I receive no bill from it?0 -
If you do not have a line at the property and have not had a line at the property then neither BT nor anyone else can bill you for anything.0

Hi former_student,
As Mark_In_Hampshire has confirmed, you would not be liable for a bill if you've never had an active line at the address. It may be the case that a line is present but is currently dorment, which therefore would mean no charges would be raised unless you decided to activate the line.
I also understand from your post that you will be renting the address early in the new year. As we provide a minimum 12 month contract, you may want to consider waiting until the new residents activate the line as you would be liable for a cancellation charge if you cancelled the line within the minimum term. Thanks Heinz for pointing this out.
Hope this helps. If I can be of any further assistance then feel free to contact me using the contact details in our profile.
All the best,
