My rights on my allocated parking spaces.

We own our house and have 2 allocated parking spaces for our house. The problem is people keep parking in them leaving us with nowhere at all to park! this week someone parked in our space for 4 days without moving once! next door had someone park in there space for 2 weeks!! I do not want this happening over Christmas and would like to know my rights? Can I put up a parking bolt? I have rang the police who cannot do anything!! and management of the site who have just told me to email different people! Please help! Thanks

Need to know more detail, I'm afraid. Presumably we're talking private land here? Who allocated the spaces, and under what agreement?
  • Look into the legalities of putting a clamping warning up, that should scare most off....

I have the same problem - I have 1 driveway and 1 allocated space just round the corner which people started parking on occassionally, and then solidly every day in the evening.

It is very frustrating as it is private property, fully marked up as being for my house not a free-to-use visitors space. It then means if we have visitors, they have to try and find a space.

I would recommend in the first instance, leaving a polite note on the car asking them to please not park there as it's your private parking space, or if you know what house they're from, just knock and ask them politely to move it. Is it marked up with your house number/obvious that it's not a public space? My space does have a sign up saying residents parking only, house number painted on the space with "V" painted for all the public visitor spaces so it's quite obvious leaving no room for confusion.

    Some other options are:
    - park your car in the middle of both spaces (assuming they are side-by-side) so it takes them both up leaving no room
    - buy a couple of big plant pots, stick a small shrub in them and leave them in the middle of each space with a sign saying your house number on

If it's the same people parking there, they should get the message.

Your best best would be to get one of those lockable posts.
I think a lot of people are siomply ignorant and don't care.

My brother did this when someone repeatedly blocked his drive, they soon moved their car when he turned up in a Landrover with a winch.
Have you thought about those collapsible bollards, lock them upright when you're not using your space and drop them down when you are. Or park behind them and block them in.

I have the same problem with a parking space round the back of my house that's on my private property - I think obviously - but some people still assume to think they can park there. I've left notes, saying that I've taken photographs of the car parked there, and if they park there again, I'll take the photos to the police. I know this won't actually make a difference, but never had the same car park there twice. At this time of year, it's Christmas shoppers being cheeky and finding places when they can't park in town. So I've bought a 'Private, No Parking' sign which I've put up. It's not very friendly, but it seems to have worked.

If its private property then defo invest in a clamp or a tow rope.

Put a wheelclamping notice up and then use the clamp. make sure there is an unregistered PAYG mobile number on it, clamp the offender, print out an invoice and put it on the car. Make sure you come from the back when they phone to ask for removal. If you're generous you could let them off a release fee, so long as they promise to stay away in future ( can't be accused of extortion then if police come) Then again clamping could be iffy if it is an Escort full of chavs.
  • is it obvious that its private, it might be obvious to you, but not to others
