Faulty toaster

We received a toaster as a wedding present in May 2008, but given that we were planning to do up our kitchen and wanted to save the new stuff for after this work we didn't start to use it straight away.
We started using the toaster about 4 months ago after our old one blew up. The other day I put a bagel in to toast and it made a horrible whining sound, started to smoke and then popped the bagel back up (untoasted). That side of the toaster now won't work (and still makes the whining and smoking).
I was wondering what my rights are, as I know it's out of guarantee having been purchased over a year ago. It's just it hasn't been used for very long and is very broken!
It was bought from John Lewis. Any suggestions?

As you're not the consumer, ie, you didn't buy the toaster, you have no rights regarding getting a repair, replacement etc. However, John Lewis tend to be one of the better retailers so it may be worth explaining the situation to them.0

It'll probably cost you in time to chase it up to be honest. Especially as its well out of guarantee.
Toasters and kettles are freely available in supermarkets these days for a fiver.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Worth a try taking it back to John Lewis. Say it was a present you don't know when it was bought.0
