Frost Stat

My boiler is in my attached garage and over the last few very cold nights, the heating has been on virtually constantly. I have no room thermostat just individual radiator thermo valves. Before I have gone to bed, I have turned each radiator down to 1. Am I using tons of gas and is the frost stat set correctly as it is running the boiler for such a long time?

I must admit the house has been lovely and toasty when I get up but I am dreading the bill!

impossible to say, don't know the size of boiler or number of radiators or temperatures

for an accurate answer take a meter reading before you go to bed and when you get up.

OP, haven't you got a programmer for the system?
    Never heard of one without.

A froststat, if working correctly, should over-ride a programmer.
    Pointless if it doesn't.

My boiler is in garage, I do have a radiator in there but its on 0.5 to 1. My thermometer in garage reads around 5c in garage. The boiler does have a frost stae but never known it make radiator come on even though last Winter was pretty bad to previous winters

Good point, I couldn't get my head around why the OP had been going round turning down the radiators at night.

The vast majority of boilers do not have programmers. [STRIKE]Are you crazy?[/STRIKE]

Maybe we are at cross purposes, by programmer I mean one of these:

Most systems have programmers, there shouldn't be any need to go messing with the TRVs.

A frost stat should be set to around 3C.

I would have thought it extremely unlikely that the boiler would run for more than short periods during the night as, even in a garage, the heat from the boiler itself would quickly raise the temperature enough to shut off the boiler.

Is your frost stat situated above the boiler?

Frost Thermostat The purpose of this is to stop the boiler or exposed parts of the system freezing in winter. This is the same as a room thermostat except it works at lower temperatures and ignores all other timers and thermostats. These should be set at between 3 & 5 deg °C and should be placed above what is at risk of frost damage, e.g. above a boiler if fitted in a garage/ outhouse, or above a radiator in a conservatory (if not on its own circuit)
