Any benifet for heating?

Hi, Me (21) and my husband (33) with two children (one is 2 years, the other is 2months)...
We have oiled heating, (we had to move to this property as there was no other option!) (council)
We have spent 500 pound in the last two months for heating oil, we are on benifets, jsa, child tax etc..
and cannot afford this much money on heating with such a low income, is there any help we can get for heating costs?.....

If you mean money towards the bill, there is no help.

No, I'm afraid there isn't. Everybody on benefits is in the same boat with the cold weather.

There is the Cold Weather Payment if the weather stays below zero for seven consecutive days.
This year you will get £25 when the average temperature where you live is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees Celsius or below over seven consecutive days during the period from 1 November to 31 March. Specified Meteorological Office weather stations are used to obtain this information.

  • Unfortunately you picked a house that has a heating system (oil) that is expensive compared with gas and sometimes electric. Gas tends to be cheapest for of heating for most people

Unfortunately no grants available, I believe some energy suppliers if your in serious debt may help but not for oil

Make sure you get your house insulated some grants may be available for that depending on income

Not sure of your circumstances but if money is so tight and obviously heating at this time of year is life or death then maybe cut down on over things where possible, sky, mobile, car etc
  • You should speak to the council, not sure if they would be able to do anything to help, but I know in my area the council are modernising homes (installing combi boilers etc) There may be something similar happening in your area soon.

If you make it clear to them you can't heat the property adequately, you may be considered for a transfer to a more suitable property, taking in to account the ages of your children.

If you have real difficulties you should also speak to CAB, as there may be charitable orgs who could help.

Hope you & your family manage to stay warm for xmas.
  • If you keep watching the news you will see the amount of unemployment rising which is no fault of my own, and as for ''keeping em closed'' I shouldnt have to go without a child just because of the people who are in employment want to keep the whole ''richer/poorer'' status, because what you have said to me is people with money can have children but people on less income cant, not very fair is it... not only now is it the government trying to de-populate us but you are starting to aswell... We need robin hood back...

    ignorence is bliss

    Moving on....

Thanks everyone for your kind replys, i really appreciate the quick responces, i think i will take the route of seeing if i can move to another property as i am already looking for an exchange so that will be the best option for me.

    thanks again.

    peace & luv

Not sure what I can add to what has been said and post 6 is out of order

If you haven't already checked make sure you get all benefits your entitled too

    http://www.entitledto.co.uk

Cut down none urgent expenses, shop around for bargains on food, its surprising how much you can save

Tips on food etc, look for BOGOF and stock up, Heron frozen foods (sell non frozen too) are good for bargains if you have one, its like Farm foods. Home bargains is another cheap shop

I know it might not sound good but can family help too, heating is a real life saver and you need it, dont want to hear kids have to suffer etc, its bad enough adults bearing the cold

    Good luck and Merry Xmas

One more thing, if money so tight try and keep heating in mainly one room and keep drafts out that way you can keep warm together

Wear lots of thin clothing as it helps trap air between clothing to keep warm. Hot water bottles in bed to keep warm.

    Hope that helps

You already get a grant for your heating (JSA, CTC etcetera). If you don't want to spend £250 per month of this generous income on fuel then do not use £250 of fuel per month. There is no sane way that heating one room costs £500 over two months.

What is your actual monthly income?

If you have two children then unless you are paying over the odds for housing then you should receive way more than £200 per week. I fail to see why you would need any more money.

So please break out of your blissful reverie and tell us what your monthly income is. And explain to us why that large sum is not adequate.
