CD Drive problem

Really annoying when trying to rip music files to my PC either through iTunes or windows media player the progress starts and looks ok then just skips through the tracks. iTunes shows 'ticks' that they have been copied but when you go to play them in your library they are not available. Windows media player skips through and reports 'Error' on each track.
I thought it was the cd drive so went and brought a new one but it does exactly the same.
Any ideas?
