Myself and my partner are thinking of going up to maybe Kirkwall on Jan. A change from here. Plus I want to go up and see with the view of moving up there.
Does anybody know of any cheap flights etc from Glasgow? We were going to get bus as get free travel in Scotland. Then ferry. However would be quicker by plane .

There is only one airline which flies from Glasgow to Kirkwall, which is Loganair, who use flybe to sell their tickets. Book well in advance and you'd probably get them for £100 each return. When you are there, I'd recommend the Orkney hotel. I didn't pay for it, (was working up there for a couple of weeks) but the hotel was great. There is a hotel bar at the back of reception which is relatively cheap, and the food is really nice in there.0 -

Thanks for that. Been wanting to go for ages. Always fancied moving up there, why I don't know.0 -
Flybe is bust, went belly up last week with the loss of 800 jobs. People who paid for tickets by VISA have lost their money.0

Its a beautiful town, I only wish that I had the opportunity to explore more while I was there. I only got 2 weeks, and I was working constantly.
The ferry might be a good option though, get a good chance to see all the scenery on the way up, plus Stromness is a lovely town too.0 -

How fabulous for you. Orkney is an amazing place, so much history. A bit windy though.0 -
Stromness was also on the mind.
Shorter sailing. However as we don't drive worried in regards getting down into Kirkwall.
Always been drawn to Orkney. Maybe its isolation. However bit concerned regarding being gay and they pair of us up there. Mainly due to reading etc. So we're cautious when looking for accom0 -
If you're relying on public transport you're best in Stromness or Kirkwall, there's a reasonably regular bus service between the two. I prefer Stromness but then I did live there as a child so I'm a bit biased! There's a great arts scene in Stromness, well, pretty much all over the islands if that's your kind of thing.
I know there are other gay people there but I'm afraid I don't really know what it's like being a gay person there so can't really expand. I know a lot of people are drawn to the isolation but then find the reality really difficult, some people go there thinking they can escape their problems but they just come with them and are exacerbated by island life.
Good luck with your trip and have fun discovering the islands, they are great!Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!

I used to live on one of the Shetland isles, so I know a fair bit about the area, any questions feel free to PM me and I will do my best to answer them.
