Changes to bank account

Can anyone give me some advice on whether or not my bank is going to charge me unfairly? About 3 years ago I switched bank accounts to the Halifax. The deal was good and I earned cashback on some of the things I bought regularly like food and petrol. Since then, they have made changes so that now I don't earn any cash back at all and since I;m living in my overdraft at the moment, they are about to change the account again, charging me £1 a day on arranged OD's up to £2500 and £2 a day on arranged OD's over £2500. Since my limit is £3500, I am potentially looking at my bank account costing me between £30 and £60 per month! Unfortunately, I'm not in a posistion to pay it off at the moment as I am deeply in debt with other loans and credit cards and have recently, for the first time ever, been refused credit. It has been a good thing really as I have had to curb my spending and make a plan to pay of all my debt but I could really do without these charges! I have applied for another bank account with a 0% OD deall for 12 months so I am going to pay off some of my Halifax OD to get it under the £2500 mark so I will only have to £30 per month but it still seems steep. Does anyone know if this is fair or would I be able to claim these charges back?

  • I seriously doubt you'd be able to claim anything back - these charges are now part of the T&C of the account, as I understand it. If you don't want to pay then I'm afraid pretty much your only option is to move the overdraft debt to another bank.

I don't believe you can claim back the charges on the overdraft for using it. However, I would look at claiming back any late fees or overlimit fees on the credit card. Furthermore was there any PPI and were you eligible for all the clauses within in? If not then you may be able to claim that it was missold to you.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009
