CC through bank

I think I read somewhere but I wanted to check, I was declined for a cc but have been recommended for one through my bank when I went to see them. I read that if you are recommended one your bank has an internal credit check and does not do an external. I was hoping this is the case because of the denied one I did not want to get two turned back quickly.

Thank you in advance

I have no certain knowledge on this, but I can give my experience in this. I applied for a credit card with my bank 1 day after I turned 18. So I had no credit rating, and I don't work as I'm at school and as such have a low income.

They accepted me though, with £1000 limit, and the typical rate of 11.9% so I didn't need to go for expensive cards likes Vanquis.

This leads me to believe I was accepted based on my own history with the bank with my current account and how I've used it.

Others may say differently, but I think my internal score helped me.

Hope this may have helped. (Was with Lloyds TSB by the way)
  • They can tell you without credit scoring you whether they will give you a card or not - good thing is that you do not have to waste a credit check - the bad thing is if they let you have one and you are late or miss a payment they will exercise their right to set off and debit the money from your account.

Last year i went into my bank to pay a cheque in, and the pushy cashier was really hard selling a product to me. Anyway, i agreed to give my phone number for them to ring me back just to get this cashier off my back, Anyway, she printed off a print-out to write my phone number down on, and i noticed a list of different services that had pre-approved amounts on. I noticed one was for their standard credit card with a £1500 credit limit. Hadn't received any mail-outs or been asked if i wanted to apply for a card. 2 months later applied for their standard credit card, and surprise surprise was instantly accepted with a £1500 credit limit. Applying for this card did not flag up a search on my credit report.
  • You should also know that not every bank does this. The big four certainly do but some of your smaller banks will use an outside company to provide the card (ie: Leeds BS uses Barclays and, until recently, Alliance and Leicester used MBNA) and they will use your credit report to base their decision on.

Sorry, I realised, would that mean that Natwest would do an external credit check and let RBS decide?

I know they are within RBS, not sure how that would work
