Double Glazed Windows

Hi guys, my landlord and I are trying to get the windows changed at my place, it's currently single glazed. She is aboard, so I have agreed to make phone calls to get appointments for quotes etc. The trouble is, these builders they come have a look and never get back to us with quotes, it's been 3 months now with few different builders. So my question is, does double glazed windows really make your home a lot warmer and save a lot money on gas? I have only got a one bedroom flat, so I pay £35/month for gas, it doesn't seen to me it could save loads of money. Also, I am in a basement flat, so it is a bit colder than on upper floors anyway. Just don't want to go through the hassle of chasing up builders etc, coz at the end of the day, it's not my property, so why should I care if the change of windows if it isn't gonna improve my living standard a lot? Any thoughts anyone?
Thanks

What are the frames made out of? Timber or UPVC?
Assuming they are wooden and the glass is not paper-thin, you can get quite far with repairing any holes and repainting the frames, then fitting draft strips.
DIY companies sell smoke matches, but a hippy joss-stick can work as well. Hold it near the window and see where the smoke escapes. Do this in sociable hours, just in case you set off a fire alarm.double glazed windows really make your home a lot warmer
Depends on how the rest of the flat is built, if there is no insulation in the ceiling or walls, then it is somewhat pointless as the heat will just leave through there first.
I would love to be your upstairs neighbour, I wouldn't turn on the heating at all. :money:I have only got a one bedroom flat, so I pay £35/month for gas, it doesn't seen to me it could save loads of money.
That does sound like a lot of gas to me (though I am a skinflint). However, the return on the windows will be over years and decades, not any time soon.it's not my property, so why should I care if the change of windows if it isn't gonna improve my living standard a lot?
You don't, give up with it.Any thoughts anyone?
Instead, spend the time going shopping for a couple of nice new fashionable jumpers in the sales and a pair of thermal tights/long johns for under your trousers. Then turn your themostat down, you will probably repay the investment in one winter.0
