Hello! I live a couple of miles from Fishguard and you've certainly chosen a fantastic place for a holiday! You're coming at the right time to view the coastline in all its flower-filled glory, and just this morning I was watching dolphins and seals in the cove near my house. The main activity here is walking - we're not exactly known for wild night life, tho' Tenby on the south coast is full of things to do and near Oakwood theme park and Folly Farm if you've got kids. Haverfordwest is a nice town for a morning's wandering and Cardigan, about 20 miles further north is a lovely drive along the coast. You must visit St Davids which is the UK's smallest city - it's very beautiful and there are some great places to eat there too. Whitesands beach is fantastic and just outside St Davids, tho' you can always find a deserted beach on this coast - We're like Cornwall but without the crowds and commercialism. Have a fabulous holiday and enjoy this magical place!

  • The Visit Pembrokeshire website should give you some ideas http://www.visitpembrokeshire.co.uk/default.asp
This is what it says about the area:

Lower Town is particularly picturesque with its cluster of quayside cottages. There is a wealth of things to see and do and the town has an excellent selection of shops, galleries and places to eat, drink and stay.
    • The Ocean Lab on the Parrog has a cyber cafe, Ocean Quest and Tourist Information Centre all under one roof. Visit the new exhibition Ollie the Octopus in his garden with hands on activities for children of all ages
    • Take a coastal walk to Carreg Wastad Point where the French Invaders landed. The spot is now marked by a stone monument.
    • Theatre Gwaun shows a changing programme of latest film releases.
    • For one week each July, the renowned Fishguard International Music Festival hosts a superb programme of orchestral, choral and related events featuring internationally acclaimed artistes and orchestras.
    • Watersports courses for all levels can be arranged at the Pembrokeshire Watersports Centre on the Parrog.

It's Fish Week in Pembrokeshire and there's lots of events on. http://www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/content.asp?nav=105,123,177&parent_directory_id=646&id=10367 Here's a few for you:

  • Starting the tail end of next week, BBC Wales has a few things going on in the nearby town of Haverfordwest.

A little further away is Langwm which has an annual scarecrow festival for the next few weeks, it's always worth a look.

When you get here, buy yourself the local newspaper the "Western Telegraph" That always has lots to do.

If you are into fish and chips, we have our very own champions not too far away in Letterston called "Something's Cooking" or you could meet up with Pembrokeshires newest MBE (she's been on the news all weekend) Mrs Brown of Browns Cafe in Pembroke. If you do head down south, remember that Pembroke and Pembroke Dock are two separate and very different towns, many tourists make that mistake.

    Hope this helps

thanks guys! sorry to be a pain, but do you know of anything that a 6 year old boy might like in or around fishguard? i know there's oakwood and folly farm, but he's been there on school trips (we only live in swansea!) and we wanted to try and find something a little 'off beat' for him! thanks!

  • OK, a six yaer old.

The ocean lab is ideal, you can also see the ferry going out and comming in from there which sadly I still find quite exciting.

There is a cheese farm nearby, where you can see the whole process. There is Pembertons just outside Narberth, a chocolate farm. There are pleanty of Jungle-Jim type ballpool enclosed play areas south of the county. I will ask at work today and get back to you tomorrow.

Another freebie, Strumble Head, to see the Lighthouse.
And Porthgain, kids seem to be fascinated by all those old tunnel/chute things and it's a lovely spot for the adults too.
I think this may be a very good time of year for the boat trip to Skomer, huge adventure for kids.
