the fact ive called BT customer services who confirmed they were calling in regards to an outstanding balance...evidence enough for you????0 -
I'd say they're on the wrong side of the law - when I worked for O2 we would never disclose any information relating to the account until we were certain we were speaking with the account holder (confirming full name and address and password on the account).
I would NEVER have started a call with "is that *title* *surname*", it'd always be "Can I speak to *title* *first name* *last name*" and would ask FOR the first line of the address, not ask them to confirm it.
My experience is only with calling customers back regarding issues they've called about at an earlier time though, I'm unsure what the process would be for "cold" calling.0 -
If it was BT and they called you and discussed anybody elses debt or divulged anybody elses data then they have breached dpa if they have done so without the express wishes and permission of that person, so yes they are in breach.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0

It sounded like a scam to me also0 -

Odd how it took you 5 posts of telling people that it wasn't a scam for you to give that evidence up
You've been quite rude to everyone who just wanted to make sure you were actually talking to BT, and you sound REALLY desperate to find out if BT have broken the law. Why?0 -
Still sounds like a scam to me. In your original post "BT" called you, hence they have your number, yet they asked your new address? BT know your address, they send you statements there, they installed your line etc etc.
Your father may well have an outstanding balance, however I do not think for one second the person who called you had access to the BT database.0 -
Maybe BT made a simple mistake?
What do you wish to happen? We all evolve - get on with it0 -
As it's a breach of the DPA all you can do is put in a formal complaint to BT and phone up the Office of the Information Commissioner's Helpline.
There is no compensation in it for you. If you are lucky they will give you up to £50 as a good will payment as companies are allowed to make a few mistakes like this under the DPA.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Whatever, Mr Plant. Scam or not, never deal with this kind of thing over the phone. And I would not tell anyone who rang me anything about myself.
The wise response to any call about an alleged debt is to insist it is put in writing and to insist that your policy is that you will not make payments to cold callers.
Scam or not, it is the same either way.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
