I presume that all the discs you have tried are shop bought originals & not homemade copies?
If so & it won't read them it's dead & time for a new drive.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
You could try cleaning it with a CD/DVD cleaning disk.0

These rarely ever work & for the price of a new drive (around £15) it's not worth the hassle!Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
Thanks I have tried to clean it but even that is not working has anyone got any idea how much it will cost to replace it is on a laptop.
Thanks0 -
Ah laptop, a bit more expensive then.
About £30 upwards if you fit it yourself.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
Are they easy to fit? And where do I get one from0

This means that the laser lens is easily accessible for very gentle and careful cleaning with a cotton bud moistened lightly preferably with the cleaning fluid that comes with CD cleaners or failing that just water won't harm it.it is on a laptop.
The lens is pretty obvious to see on a moving carrier. As the carriers sometimes clog with dust gently moving it along the track a few times may help too.
If it still won't work then yes it's time to replace it but spending a few minutes on maintenance is always worth a try.0 -
In addition to completely agreeing with the above post, changing one on a laptop is simple. If you look underneath, you'll see a screw that retains it in place. Undo that and prise it out gently and it'll slide out - best prising the plate from the screwhole initially. Then just slide in the new one fully (making sure it has the little metal bracket on the back first the same as the one taken out) and put the screw back in.0
