Double Glazing...to do or not?

Options
Afternoon all,

is it worth us spending £7k+ on new windows/doors (the existing units are all original double glazed wooden frame) or sell the house at an achievable price knowing the work has to be done?
Four of the windows have condensation between the panes, the rest are ok but need a lick of paint?

And if so, can anyone recommend double glazing firms?
We have had quotes ranging from £22k (!!!) down to £7k+ - the cheapest company also did our neighbours windows and conservatory 4 years ago - no problems.

As we are selling I want to minimise all costs but maximise value.

Thanks in advance,

hapless

  • No I wouldn't change them.

Change the units that have failed and give them all a lick of paint.

A lot of people don't like UPVC, myself included. In some cases it knocks value off your house, like laminate flooring.

    Firstly, ask an Estate Agent.

Secondly, do you have a guarantee? If you have a claim against whoever did the work in the fist place you might be able to negotiate a special price from them (assuming they are still in business).

thanks for the replies so far folks.

Ours is one of only 2 in the street with the original windows, people have chosen a mix of styles (white, brown, leaded, plain, georgian....) so I don't see that as having a downside on the saleability of the house.

No guarantee - house was built in 1988 so the windows have done well so far!!
We only moved here 6 years ago.

We were in a similar position about a year ago.

About 6 of our window units had popped and we thought this would put people of buying our house. I phoned a few local companies and was quoted about £400-500 for fitting and replacing the faulty units. Much cheaper than having new UPVC double glazing installed.

Luckily, for us ,we got the work done through a friend of ours whose father owns a company that makes double glazed units and he only charged us for the cost of the units - which came in about £250.

    Hope this helps.
